Since the passing of Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993, our role is to: promote the retention of Māori land in the hands of its owners, whānau and hapū facilitate the occupation, development and use of Māori land ensure that decisions made about Māori land are fair and balanced taking into account the needs of all the owners and their beneficiaries.
This process is separate to the Court’s work to identify successors and hold the final meeting of assembled owners. More information is available on Te Tari Whakatau's website here.
The intended amendments are designed to provide a strong platform for Māori land owners, to give Māori land owners more autonomy and, if they so choose, support to realise the economic potential of their land.
