She is the fifth judge to be appointed as Chairperson of the Waitangi Tribunal, following Chief Judge Kenneth Gillanders Scott, Tā Justice Taihakurei Durie, Tā Justice Joe Williams and Chief Judge Wilson Isaac.
While the numbers of Māori women judges have increased in the Māori Land Court and District Court, Justice Lowell Goddard was the first, and so far the only Māori woman to become a Queen’s Counsel and judge of the High Court.

DEPUTY CHIEF JUDGE – CRAIG COXHEAD I am delighted to advise that Judge Craig Coxhead has been appointed as the new Deputy Chief Judge of our Court. Judge Coxhead was appointed to the Māori Land Court in 2008 and is one of the resident judges in Waiariki, as well as a Presiding Officer in the Waitangi Tribunal, Chief Justiceof the High Court of Niue and a Justiceof the High Court of Cook Islands.

Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993, the Māori Land Court Rules and Regulations are the legal responsibility of Te Puni Kōkiri (the Ministryof Māori Development) on behalf of the Minister for Māori Development.

will of a deceased person, the authority for that person to act is given in a grant of
probate.
