Succession is the legal transfer of interests or shares in Māori land from a person who has passed away to the people who are legally entitled to own those interests.
Australian lawyers and judges had quite a presence at the Conference. One of the interesting sessions was on alternative dispute resolution.
A copy of the minutes will be sent to the applicant and other interested parties. The orders will be drawn up, signed by either the Judge or a Deputy Registrar and sealed with the Court’s official seal.

The Act now clarifies that Māori Land Court judges will follow the tikanga of the hapū or iwi associated with the land being succeeded to when deciding whether whāngai can succeed to a land interest. This means that in some cases whāngai may succeed to land interests as if they were a birth child or grandchild of the person who has passed.
