The Minister of Māori Development has sought expressions of interest for the next Chief Judge of the Māori Land Court, and will in due course announce the appointment of the next Chief Judge and Chairperson of the Waitangi Tribunal. The former Chief Judge continues to be presiding officer of the Waitangi Tribunal over those inquiries that have been already heard or part-heard by him.

I am also presiding over a number of urgent inquiries in the Waitangi Tribunal, which has never been busier. The rapid pace of Treaty settlements has created challenges for the Tribunal, and the number of the applications in the Māori Land Court continues to rise as well.
