The Māori Land Court is a part of the Ministry of Justice (The Ministry). Like the Ministry, our purpose is to deliver people-centred services to provide access to justice for all.
Judge Isaac and Judge Coxhead attended the 17th Conference of Chief Justices of Asia and the Pacific. Judge Isaac attended representing the Chief Justice of Niue and Judge Coxhead attended representing the Chief Justice of the Cook Islands.

In addition, while it remains important that kanohi-ki-te-kanohi justice is conducted in our courthouses, which play an important role as the local face of justice for our communities, we should endeavour to use alternative measures such as telephone conferencing, zoom and or AVL if this is more suitable to Māori land owners and ultimately assists Māori land owners’ access to justice.

While the numbers of Māori women judges have increased in the Māori Land Court and District Court, Justice Lowell Goddard was the first, and so far the only Māori woman to become a Queen’s Counsel and judge of the High Court.
Within the Māori Land Court districts, average ownership numbers range from 51 owners per block in the Tākitimu district to 154 owners per block in the Waiariki district.
