Following the signing of theTreaty of Waitangi in 1840, the Crown negotiated 10 large-scale purchases of land from Ngāi Tahu whereby 3,450,000 acres of land, almost the entire land base of the iwi, was sold for £14,750.
Te Tiriti o Waitangi includes Hobson’s
signatureon behalf of the Crown and as stated 543 signatures of rangatira, and is therefore legally the
‘document of significant signature’.

Tama Potaka, Minister for Māori
Development, announced the
appointment of Judge Craig
Coxhead as the Deputy Chief
Judge of the Māori Land Court.
Sometimes
the sessions would last for only a few days, but
on other occasions, particularly in the Waikato,
Whanganui, Hawke’s Bay, and the East Coast,
the hearings could last for months.
The main priorities forthe Court now are first, to remedy errors in the lists, using s 86 of TTWMA, and second, to update the list of successors based on previous and new evidence, the latter of which requires hearings to be held so evidence can be heard.
Chief Judge Fox has also been the presiding officer forthe Waitangi Tribunal onthe Aquaculture claims, the Te Arawa Mandate and Settlement claims, Central North Island Stage 1 claims, the Te Kōhanga Reo claims and the Te Rohe Pōtae claims.
