Former Chief Māori Land Court Judge, who then became a Justice of the High Court, ET Durie provided the following analyses of the nature of Māori rights to land; Maori see themselves not as masters of the environment but as members of it. The environment owed its origins to the union of Rangi, the sky, and Papatuanuku, the earth mother, and the activities of their descendent deities who control all natural resources and phenomena.

The register will record, for each member of the management committee: details of member’s interest in the Māori freehold land incorporated; the dealings in the interests by the member; and declarations made by members.
An incorporation must maintain a register of interests for committee members setting out: the details of any beneficial interests held by each member any dealings in the beneficial interest by each member, and any declarations made by members of the committee.
