It was as a result of attending Primary School in Rūātoki that he learnt to speak Māori before he was then sent to Auckland to attend Boarding School at Mt Albert Grammar School where he was one of two boys who studied Māori in what was a boys only school with a population of 1,200.

Trustee responsibilities can include: researching options for the whenua on behalf of owners attending regular trustee meetings to discuss and debate plans for the trust communicating with owners and organising hui for owners or trustees to discuss plans for the whenua visiting the whenua regularly to check on the wellbeing of the land, and working with people involved in the whenua or trust, such as a lessee, accountant, or management team.

Therefore, the Court’s role is to ensure the list is updated quickly to ensure living successors are able to attend and vote at the meeting. On 9 November 2015, the Court approved a list of 1071 persons for the Hāwea-Wānaka substitute block.11 An updated list was referred to the Court on 5 October 2017, which included a list of 1146 interim beneficiaries for the block.
