The special bond between Māori people and the
land is recognised by the Māori Land Court, and the
records held by this Court form an invaluable part of the
whakapapa of all Māori.
The time and travel costs associated with attending a court
sitting are removed when an application can be decided by a
registrar.
This approach also supports the efficient running of the Māori
Land Court.
Who mediates?
Initially Māori Land Court judges will act as mediators. In
the future, the service will be supported by a pool of non-
judicial mediators identified to have the right skills to support
disputes over Māori land.

Some people become landowners when a whānau member transfers land to them by gift or sale. The Maori Land Court will ‘vest’ the land interest by way of a vesting order.
