Te Tiriti o Waitangi includes Hobson’s signature on behalf of the Crown and as stated 543 signatures of rangatira, and is therefore legally the ‘document of significant signature’. The English version has only 39 signatures – and those 39 rangatira had debated the meaning of the Māori text, before signing what they believed was te Tiriti.
