PAYMENT OF RATES Any Māori reservation set aside for the purpose of marae, meeting place, or urupā/burial ground or any reservation set aside for the common use and benefit of the people of Aotearoa qualifies for exemption from payment of rates (this exemption is granted by the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002). The exemption does not apply to marae land that is used primarily for commercial or agricultural activity or for residential accommodation.
