for Māori to have their rights, and their systems of governance, acknowledged alongside the law of the
state as a matter of justice.
Judge Williams is a former Co-Tumuaki of Te Hunga Roia Māori ō Aotearoa (2006-2008), he has presented seminars for the Auckland District LawSociety, Auckland College of Law, NZ Bar Association and at two World Indigenous Law Conferences.
The 2017 conference was attended by over 1400 delegates 30 Chief Justices’ from throughout the Pacific and 13 Presidents of LawSocieties. There were more than 350 people (lawyers and Judges) attending this conference.
The key difference is that the remedies for resolving employment disputes are generally highly regulated by the law. While this could be said to be the same for Māori Land law, the breadth of disputes is much greater, creating the possibility of a wide range of settlement outcomes.

The first was to keep up with developments in the law. The second was to focus on the role of the law in our evolving society, and the third was to take nothing for granted and always test for yourself what someone else says you should do.
I cast my memory back to a hui of the Māori LawSociety that was held not far from here, in Waitangi in 2015, when Sir Justice Joe Williams posed the question to the Society, Can you see the island?
