This practice note applies to the appointment, engagement and payment of the fees of
any lawyer1 per ss 70(3), 98(3) and 98(9)(c) of Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993 (Act) out
of the Māori Land Court Special Aid Fund (Special Aid Fund).

There is also the addition of a disposal action of ‘may be destroyed or discharged’ for some classes
of records which recognises that these classes refer to duplicates of maps and plans or copies of
minute books.
There is a close correlation between the small number of Māori women who become partners in law firms and senior counsel, and the pool of those considered eligible for appointment to the bench.
