Protected Objects Act 1975
The Protected Objects Act 1975 has the power to determine ownership of any taonga tūturu found anywhere in Aotearoa New Zealand or within the territorial waters of New Zealand.
They deliver a comprehensive range of services promoting the retention, use of, and
development of Māori land as a taonga tuku iho by Māori landowners, their whanau and
hapu, and their descendants.
Today, many Māori landowners continue to act as collective kaitiaki of their whenua, to honour and protect their land as taonga-tuku-iho. Our role as Te Kooti Whenua Māori is to facilitate and promote the retention and use of Māori land, and support whānau to occupy, develop and use their whenua.
“Pātaka Whenua also enables a connectedness that has not existed before – whānau living in across the ditch and further afield will have the same access to the court record, a taonga tuku iho, as those who are able to visit us in person today.”
