Before 6 February 2021 Succession applications are decided by Māori Land Court judges. From 6 February 2021 Simple and uncontested succession applications can be decided by a registrar of the Māori Land Court without a court hearing.

Māori Land Court hearings are open to the public. However, if a sensitive matter is being discussed, the judge may decide to close the court sitting to the public.
Orders are granted by the High Court. PROSECUTE To go to the Māori Land Court for a hearing of an application and to present the case to the Judge; to process through the Māori Land Court.
