Third The project confirmed why it is important for the Māori Land Court to continue its current role given its historical and particular expertise in the administration of titles.
In 1894 the Court was given jurisdiction to grant probate and letters of administration with respect to Māori people. The Court lost this jurisdiction in 1967.

Where the title to the land is held directly by the owners (i.e. there is no administration structure in place) the owners have to apply to the Registrar for a certificate of confirmation per s 160 of the Act.
