As a newly appointed Judge of the Māori Land Court it is highly appropriate that my
contribution to the Judges’ Corner relates to one of the new tools added to our kete by the
legislative changes that came into effect in February this year.
There is the ability to appoint a mediator beyond that list if the parties consider that it is justified in the circumstances and the appointment is approved by the Chief Executive and the Judge or Registrar who referred the matter to a mediator.
The former ChiefJudge, Judge Isaac, retired from his role on 30 April, and accordingly Deputy ChiefJudge Fox and Deputy Chairperson Judge Reeves have taken up the roles of Acting ChiefJudge and Acting Chairperson respectively.
She was also appointed as an Alternate Environment Court Judge in 2009. ChiefJudge Fox was appointed as the Deputy ChiefJudge of the Māori Land Court in 2010, and as the ChiefJudge of the Court in 2023.
