If you are interested in or affected by an application and wish to make representations on
the application, you must notify the Court in writing by 4 pm on the 1st of April 2023 and specify brief
details of your concerns.
If ownership of any of the land is sold or transferred outside
of the hapū, the MLC can require a portion of the land be set
apart as a Māori reservation8 for the common use and benefit
of the people of Aotearoa.
Here an individual can form the trust and appoint trustees and the shareholding, which maybe across many blocks, is held for the uri of that individual down through the generations.
These changes include making it easier for landowners to establish Māori incorporations,
and provisions for removing a trustee or a member of a committee of management of an
incorporation have been updated.
During the Māori Freehold Land Registration Project, the Court came across a number of instances of this kind. In a small number of cases with the consent of the owners of the land the Court was able to formalise the situation.
