The purpose of the National Pänui / Te Pänui ä Motu is
to provide notice to interested parties of hearings being
conducted in, and applications received by, the Mäori Land
Court.
Questions may arise as to whether spouses, civil union partners, de facto partners or whāngai are also eligible to be buried in an urupā when they may have no affiliation to the hapū associated with the land.
These rights apply for the surviving spouse’s lifetime, unless they remarry, form a civil union, enter a de facto relationship, or give up their rights by choice.
