As a newly appointed Judge of the Māori Land Court it is highly appropriate that my contribution to the Judges’ Corner relates to one of the new tools added to our kete by the legislative changes that came into effect in February this year.

The dispute resolution service is free of charge, but you may need to meet the costs of travel to attend mediation and of any independent legal advice (if you choose to seek it).

The topography of the peninsula has undergone significant change due to changes in the shoreline, meaning the land title no longer reflected the shape of the land.

Te Kooti Whenua Māori has been on a change journey for the past few years. Starting with legislative change in February 2021, the way we process applications in late 2022, and the launch of our online portal, Pātaka Whenua, this year.

From 1 July 2025 , Māori Land Court fees increase by 3.65% . This increase is part of a wider change across all courts and tribunals in Aotearoa, New Zealand.
