The Act also allows for appeals to the Māori Appellate
Court in relation to decisions of the Māori Land Court
around access to Māori land for water infrastructure.
What has changed?
The Local Government (Water Services) Act (the Act)
has made the following changes to the Māori Land
Court’s jurisdiction.
In August 2020, the Government passed targeted
changes to Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993 to simplify
the legal processes for owning, occupying and using
Māori land.
The respondents are the trustees of the Hanataua Ahu Whenua Trust. The matter was heard in the Aotea Māori Land Court, by Judge A H C Warren and Dr Ruakere Hond, in Whanganui on 1 and 2 September 2022 in both languages and with the aid of a te reo Māori interpreter.
Te Kooti Whenua Māori has been on a change journey for the past few years. Starting with legislative change in February 2021, the way we process applications in late 2022, and the launch of our online portal, Pātaka Whenua, this year.
