In August 2020, the Government passed targeted changes to Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993 to simplify the legal processes for owning, occupying and using Māori land. These changes make it easier to set up a Māori incorporation, support good practices by incorporations, and provide landowners with greater transparency of decisions made by committee members.
What does this mean for you? If you file an application to the Māori Land Court or the Māori Appellate Court on or after 1 July 2025 , you will notice an increase in the fee you need to pay.
Of the appointment, the Chief Justice said: “The role that Judge Fox now assumes as Chief Judge of the Māori Land Court is a role of great responsibility. The Māori Land Court is one of the oldest courts in New Zealand and the work it does is central to the fabric of the Māori community, and the Māori economy.”

If the landowner does not agree with the outcome of the review, they can apply to the Māori Land Court to appeal this decision under section 170(1) of the Local Government (Water Services) Act 2025 .
