From its beginnings
as a mechanism that enabled the acquisition by
Pākehā of huge tracts of Māori land, the Court
has continued to evolve to the present day when
it enables and assists with the retention and
utilisation of Māori land by its owners, whānau
and hapū.
The Māori Land Court has been here for 150 years
and if Māori have their way, it is here to stay.
I te tau 2022, nā runga āno i te wāhi hiki i ngā
here o ngā tikanga e ai kī te Protection Framework,
i whakatūria e te Kooti ētahi nohoanga motu-
hake hei whakanui tahi i ngā kopoutanga a ēnei
Kaiwhakawā hou e toru ki ō rātou whānau, ō rātou
hoa mahi me ō rātou hoa. He hui hirahira ēnei hui
katoa me te haere tawhiti atu o ngā hunga ki ngā
nohoanga katoa.
In 2022, with the adjustment of the rules
under the Protection Framework, the Court held
a series of special sittings to celebrate the appoint-
ment of these three new judges with their whānau,
colleagues and friends. All events were auspicious
occasions with people travelling from far and wide
to attend the sittings.
