The special
bond between Māori people and the land is
recognised by the Māori Land Court, and the
records held by this Court form an invaluable
part of the whakapapa of all Māori.
In 2005 the Government provided over $30 million over a five year period to fund the Māori Freehold Land Project in a joint venture between the Māori Land Court, LINZ, the Ministry of Justice and TPK to ensure the registration of all Māori freehold land titles and orders with LINZ.
The Court recognises
that land is a taonga tuku iho of special
significance to Māori, and for that reason, its
primary objective is to promote and assist in
the retention of Māori land in the hands of its
owners and the effective use, management and
development of that land by its owners.
It is a time to take
stock and reset for the year ahead. We were hon-
oured to be guided through this process on 10 July
2023 by iwi whatukura from around the seven dis-
tricts of the Māori Land Court who undertook a
virtual karakia for the landand waters of Aotearoa
and Te Waipounamu, for the people of the landand for all of us who work for Māori landowners.
