Any benefit derived from
the trust are used to fund Māori Community Purposes (mostly charitable) as defined by
section 218 of Te Ture Whenua Act 1993.
Trust records include those created under previous legislation, in particular those that
resulted from applications under section 438 and 439 of the Māori Affairs Act 1953, which
were the pre-cursors to the current AhuWhenua Trust structure.
Prior to its integration into the Department for Courts
and Ministry of Justice, the Māori Land Court was
part of a section within the Department of Māori
Affairs (often referred to as the court section).
Disestablished in 1989, the former Department had
support staff located at many offices around New
Zealand who maintained minute book series for
judicial officers and/or bodies working in their
respective areas or for specific departmental or land
board activities.

Some marae are lucky enough to be supported, at least in part, by ahuwhenua land trusts which may make donations, in money or in kind, to keep the marae running.
An obvious corollary to that proposition is, subject to the available resources and infrastructure of the trust to cater for such procedures. For example, one ahuwhenua trust has over 8,000 beneficial owners for an area of land less than 200 hectares with income of less than $10,000.00 per annum.
