If the iwi come to a Court for a resolution, then in my view it is incumbent on us to make a decision, as the parties have ended up in Court, fully cognisant that by being there, the ultimate decision is no longer theirs to be made, and that it is now a matter for the Court to decide.

Appeals about landlocked land will also be heard by the Māori Appellate Court rather than the High Court. To support how the Māori Land Court functions, judges will be able to appoint experts in tikanga Māori and whakapapa as additional members of the Court, and they can hold judicial settlement conferences to assist parties to a dispute to settle a claim or issue.
