The main claimant for the block was the
Hawke’s Bay rangatira Karaitiana Takamoana,
who had earlier formed part of a group of chiefs
who had leased the land to a consortium of
Pākehā runholders led by Thomas Tanner. The
Court’s investigation of title began on 15 March
1866 and was heard initially in the Masonic
Hall at Napier, with Judge Smith presiding and
Te Keene and Te Hemara sitting as Assessors.
