There are 50 original owners who mainly resided at Kaiapoi and Kaikoura. In 2023, successors to the Hāwea-Wānaka block voted for interim representation, through a process facilitated by Te Arawhiti (Te Tari Whakatau) and Te Puni Kōkiri.
