Some people become landowners when a whānau member transfers land to them by gift or sale. The Maori Land Court will ‘vest’ the landinterest by way of a vesting order.

(c) To buy any land or interest in land, shares or assets whatsoever whether by way of
lease, purchase, exchange or otherwise and to acquire, sell, hire or otherwise deal in
vehicles, shares, plant, chattels or equipment.
When this happens, descendants
who do whakapapa to the land are often not entitled to succeed
to their landinterest or shares until the spouse or partner enters
a new relationship, dies or surrenders their interest.
In 2017, an application was made to the Māori Land Court to determine the
status of the land, the ownership of the land and the relative interests of the owners.
