Te Kooti Whenua Māori – Māori Land Court (MLC) is the
New Zealand Court that hears matters relating to Māori
land. The unique relationship between Māori and whenua is
recognised by the MLC, and the records held by the Court
form an invaluable part of the whakapapa of all Māori people.
If the committee doesn’t comply with a request from the
investigator, the MLC can enquire further and hear any
witnesses concerning the matter. The Court may hold any
committee member guilty of contempt of court if they refuse
to cooperate.

v R [2020] NZSC 89, submissions were sought on the application of tikanga on the question of whether the Court has
jurisdiction to hear an appeal against conviction after the death of the appellant.
