Within te ao Māori, rangatiratanga can embody the authority of a rangatira (a Chief) but importantly also
that of the people, being the whānau (family), hapū (sub-tribe) and iwi (tribe).
Succession to Māori land interests can be complex for whānau
and for whāngai, and Māori land is often owned by members
of different whānau (with different views on whāngai
succession).
In 2022, with the adjustment of the rules
under the Protection Framework, the Court held
a series of special sittings to celebrate the appoint-
ment of these three new judges with their whānau,
colleagues and friends. All events were auspicious
occasions with people travelling from far and wide
to attend the sittings.
