The most common governance entity is the ahu whenua trust, of which there are now over 5,500 in existence.

Not all of the trustees of the ahu whenua trusts have been contacted and further work is needed in that respect.
Trustees are appointed by the Māori Land Court under the jurisdiction set out in s 222 of Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993.
