Towards the end of the 19th century, as
a result of yet further changes, the concept of
‘Māori freeholdland’ began to emerge, meaning
land that had been investigated by the Native
Land Court and was under its jurisdiction, but
which nevertheless was a freehold title.
It also enables Māori landowners to seek a charging order
if they have paid more than their share of water services
charges on Māori freeholdland held in multiple ownership.
