This model for the utilisation of multiply-owned Māoriland had its origins in Taitokerau in 1989 where, under s 438 of the Māori Affairs Act 1953, a block was vested in a trust with exclusive use areas identified in a schedule to the trust order for whānau shareholding groups.
Special fixtures are arranged and advertised in accordance
with the provisions of the MäoriLand Court Rules and they
may not necessarily be listed in this publication.
This is important because
there are numerous examples of Māori landtrusts and incorporations that have
flourished under the Act, which invites the questions: why have some Māoriland
blocks succeeded and others have not?
We get a small amount of dividend payments each year and a tax return has to be prepared. Our trust order requires the trust to be reviewed every five years by the MāoriLand Court.
Former Judge Layne Harvey discusses the appointment of trustees to Māori landtrusts, the ability, experience, knowledge, and acceptability of the nominees.
