Māori Land Court | Judge’s Corner
Judge D J Ambler
Review of Te Ture Whenua Act 1993
Introduction
At the beginning of April this year the Associate Minister of Māori Affairs released the
Review Panel’s report into Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993.
For example, one ahu whenua trust has over 8,000 beneficial owners for an area of land less than 200 hectares with income of less than $10,000.00 per annum.
Section 218 of Te Ture Whēnua Māori Act 1993 contains a list of Māori community purposes to which income
from the whānau trust may be applied if provision is made in the trust order.
The Chief Judge has approved new timely access to justice performance measures for Te Kooti Whenua Māori. Read the Chief Judge's letter to learn more about the measures, why they have been introduced, and the Court's long-term goal of improving access to justice for Māori landowners and court users.
