In the late 1850s, this so-called ‘pre-emption’

disintegrated, partly as a result of the disastrous
purchase of the Waitara block in 1859, which
led to the outbreak of war in Taranaki.

To better serve our communities, we opened
new Court venues at Te Wānanga o Awanuiārangi
(Whakatāne), Waitahanui Community Centre
(Taupō), Te Aho Wānanga (Ōpōtiki), and The
Resort (Te Kaha). Although arranging these ven-
ues is often a complex task, these new locations
make court services more accessible, meeting the
needs of people where they live and work.
