The MLC operates under the provisions of Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993 (‘the Act’). Trustees1 are bound by Te Ture Whenua Māori Act and the Trusts Act 2019.

Trustees could then be appointed to administer it, and they would be able to grant leases or licences for the necessary term. Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993 may also give some further flexibility so as to allow certain types of development to take place on a reservation.
The Māori Land Court must confirm any trust order you decide upon (sections 219 or 244 of Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993). If you require assistance, please contact your local Māori Land Court office.
