The opening ceremony began with karakia led by mana whenua kaumātua representative Cordry Huata (Ngāti Kahungunu) and whānau, who blessed each area of the building as guests were welcomed through the newly designed spaces. A mihi followed, delivered by Dr Jeremy Tātere MacLeod (Ngāti Kahungunu), before the Court held a formal sitting presided over by Judge Damian Stone (Ngāti Kahungunu), Māori Land Court Judge for Tākitimu.
The principal difficulty with the proposal for an external manager or administrator is
that it creates an additional and unnecessary category of governor of Māori land for
a very isolated problem, when that role can and should be performed by a trustee
(as, for example, the Māori Trustee previously did under the Māori Affairs Act 1953).
