In his classic book Māori Land Tenure (1977) Sir Hugh Kawharu wrote that the system of Māori land tenure created by the Native Lands Act of 1865 was an ‘engine of destruction for any tribe’s tenure of land, anywhere’ (p 15).

Welcome to the year that was for the Māori Land Court. And what a busy year it was. The judges have been working with the staff of the seven Māori Land Court registries to move through the backlog of cases before the Court.

It would be interesting to see the response if our Māori Land Court required the parties’ written submissions in upcoming cases to be uploaded to the Māori land Court website prior to hearings.
With the focus of the recent review on increased productivity of land, let’s not forget the many trusts and incorporations that already do a great job and are success stories that have been celebrated this weekend.
