The judges of the Māori Land Court expect that 90% of Court decisions will be delivered within three months of the last day of hearing or receipt of the last submission in the case in question.

If there is sufficient evidence produced to satisfy the Court of the case against you, judgment against you may be given in your absence.

Succession is confirmed by a judge or registrar, and the whakapapa to land and landowners become part of the permanent court record.

When one adds to the mix the underlying principles of Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993 – namely of land retention and land utilisation, in effect two competing principles – then the challenges facing Māori land owners and the Māori Land Court can be quite difficult.
