Deputy Chief Judge Craig Coxhead was appointed to the Māori Land Court on 25 January 2008 and appointed Deputy Chief Judge in May 2024.

laying claim to the whole of the island and
others only to sections of it, mostly representing
sections or hapū of Ngāti Whakaue, Ngāti
Uenukukōpako, Ngāti Rangiwewehi, and Ngāti
Rangiteaorere.

Ngāti Whakaue, Ngāti Pikiao, Ngāti Rangiwewehi Steve first began work in the Maori Affairs Department in July 1984 working Māori Trustee and then the Land Development division before becoming an Alienation Officer in 1989.
The whenua has historic connections to Ngāti Awa, Ngāti Rārua
and Ngāti Tama who settled in the area following the hekenga of the early nineteenth
century.

In the recent High Court decision of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Trust v Attorney-General [2022] NZHC 843,
there was considerable discussion of tikanga Māori in the context of who exercised mana whenua
where the following were found;
- Tikanga Māori is a source of broadly shared core values (tāhuhu) that may inform the
development of the law and in some contexts is law
