Following the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, the Crown negotiated several largescale purchases ofland in Te Waipounamu (the South Island) whereby almost the entire land base of Ngāi Tahu, some 34.5 million acres ofland, was sold for £14,750. 1 Ngāi Tahu’s landlessness was the subject of several Crown investigations in the mid-to-late nineteenth century.

for minute books of the Māori Land Court and Māori Appellate Court
Introduction
In the 150 year history of the Māori Land Court
evidence and decisions have been recorded in local
(and more) recently national minute books.
There was also whānau discussion about land interests in the Rangitīkei area. My mother was one of eleven siblings, all of whom had a little bit of knowledge of their Māori land interests but nothing too specific.
