The unique relationship between Māori and whenua is recognised by the MLC, and the records held by the Court form an invaluable part of the whakapapa of all Māori people. The MLC operates under the provisions of Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993 (‘the Act’).

Any final terms of trust are subject to confirmation by the Māori Land Court in accordance with sections 219 or 244 of Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993. 5.
In general, however, we can be satisfied that the work completed has been of assistance to the majority of owners. As a result of the project, registration of 97% of the 27,411 Māori land titles was completed.

The first is that where trustees are not appointed according to an election the Court is accused of ignoring the wishes of the owners or of usurping their role in electing individuals of the owners’ choice.

The South Island Landless Native Act 1906 was repleaded in 1909 without these 181 original beneficiaries having received their land. The working list of potential owners was updated at a sitting of the Māori Land Court in Te Waipounamu on 26 April 2022, minute book 76 Te Waipounamu 246-311.
