A similarly difficult situation arises in relation to papakāinga. The intention of setting aside a papakāinga reservation is to provide housing near the marae, particularly for kaumātua and their families, to keep the marae as a living, vibrant centre of the community.
The changes in the Act respond to demand to build papakāinga housing on Māori land for the purposes of supporting Māori into housing and whānau to return to their whenua.
Benefits The intention is to make it easier to secure finance for papakāinga housing developments, so whānau can realise their housing aspirations.
