A mortgage or loan may be acquired by:
the sole owner of a Māori land block
all the owners of a Māori land block acting together
the trustees of a Māori land block who are empowered to raise finance against the block, or
a Māori Incorporation which holds Māori land.
As the saying goes, many hands make light work and those hands ensure preparations for an occasion of this nature and this size are successful, and consequently there are many people that assisted with the arrangements for this occasion to ensure we arrived at this day.
At 2025 Chief Judge’s MB 373-390 (4 February 2025) the Court made orders amending a succession order to Teone Karepe I or Hoani Karepe at 32 T 117-119 (30 May 1972) and cancelling a succession order to Porokuru Te Kiwi at 155 ROT MB 234 (30 November 1970).
If the trustees acquire further land or other assets for the purposes of the trust, that land
becomes trust land, and the other assets become trust property.
As a court of record, we are responsible for the accurate documentation of the succession and management of Māori land. The legislation that enables us to perform this role is Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993, which recognises the importance of Māori land as taonga-tuku-iho – of special significance to Māori passed down through generations.
