Māori judges were definitely a scarce commodity, however I spent a couple of years practising in Henderson when Judge Mick Brown was still sitting as a judge. Mick was a pioneer for many of the initiatives we now see in the Youth Justice area – restorative justice, and court sittings on marae – and a real character in the courtroom.
