Francis Dart Fenton drafted the Native Lands
Act 1865 and was the first Chief Judge of the
Court (1865-1882). Fenton came from a middle-
class family of solicitors in England, and
qualified as a solicitor after a period as an
articled clerk in his uncle’s law firm in the town
of Huddersfield.
