It is a comprehensive guide to Māori
reservations and the regulations governing
them, designed to inform and assist people
who want to establish a reservation, trustees
of reservations, and people who want to use
reservations for events or activities.
Copies are
available from the MLC.
Māori reservations are different to Māori reserves. Māori
reserves are lands administered by the Māori Trustee under
the Māori Reserved Land Act 1955.
Urupa Reservations Urupā reservations (Māori burial grounds) have a special status in legal terms as well as having family, spiritual, cultural and historical importance.
One of the great advantages of establishing a marae, papakāinga, meeting place, recreational or sports ground, or wāhi tapu as a Māori reservation is that while the land is a Māori reservation it cannot be alienated.
