Conversely, the use of the phrase ‘tino rangatiratanga’ or ‘unfettered
chiefly powers’40 in the Māori Text is often relied upon by Māori to assert that sovereignty over their
lands, resources and other taonga was never ceded to the British Crown, but rather Māori authority was
