Since the establishment of the Native land Court 1865, we have collected and managed over 23 million documents, all of which are linked in some way to whenua and whānau Māori.
On 30 October 2015 we turned 150 and to mark that milestone we produced a publication called ‘He Pou Herenga Tangata, He Pou Herenga Whenua, He Pou Whare Kōrero – 150 Years of the Māori Land Court’ Our publication provides a detailed history of the origins of the Native Land Court and looks at the role of the Court over its 150 year history.
The former Chief Judge continues to be presiding officer of the Waitangi Tribunal over those inquiries that have been already heard or part-heard by him.
Pātaka Whenua, the Māori Land Court’s new online portal, launched in June 2023.
Both trust types are land management trusts involving one or more Māori freehold land blocks (and in some cases, general land owned by Māori).
